alligator stew and crawfish pie*

I'm sure that you've been glued to the TV for the last day, watching for news about Hurricane Alberto. No? Well, we have! But maybe that's because the area covered by the current hurricane warning ends just south of us, in Longboat Key. (We're in Holmes Beach, on Anna Maria Island, if you care to Google that.)

It's warm and rainy here, as you might expect. We're just hanging out, watching World Cup soccer and weather reports and and biding our time. Right now it doesn't look like we're going anywhere, but we're also not the ride-it-out types, so if we get the word to evacuate we will. We have flashlights and ice and bottled water and plenty of booze, so we should be fine!

The house is terrific--lots of room for everyone, cable TV, and THREE huge jacuzzi tubs. The boys have had TWO baths each since we got here, and Wade promised them that if they would both rest, they could get in the big tub this afternoon, and then have an ice cream cone. We're also enjoying the wildlife that live RIGHT BEHIND the house--today we've seen a blue heron, a couple of pelicans, some parrots and a mama and baby dolphin. All without ever leaving the house! So hurricane aside, we're having fun, although my fake tan has completely washed off and I'm apparently not going to get any REAL sun this week. Oh well.

I'm able to get on the internet from the beach house (thank you, neighbor with the unsecured wireless connection--we're pretty sure it's the guy across the canal with the big screen TV, no furniture, and no blinds on the windows) and while I can RECEIVE e-mail, I can't SEND any (probably my punishment for stealing the neighbor's wifi). So if you've e-mailed me about anything important, like NFL fantasy football (Tony, I'm out, but thanks for thinking of me!) I'm not ignoring you. I just can't get back to you. But I'll keep updating about the hurricane, as I can, so watch this space.

In the meantime, take a spin past Mir's new venture, Want Not. It's a SHOPPING blog, people! And it's all about how to shop AND save! It's the perfect site. A warning, though: if you're going to click the link on this post, be SURE to cover your eyes. Because good lord what is that! Sheesh.

And I'm also over Carnival of Family Life today, too, along with some other really terrific family and parenting bloggers. Enjoy! And don't worry--we'll be fine. Wet, perhaps, but fine!

*No that's not what we're eating (eew)--it's a relevant song lyric. Who can name the song? Anyone? Anyone?

Hoping this misses you! You're sure to be wet though.
My family is at the southern end of the warning, in Sarasota, just a bit away from Anna Maria. You could always go hang out there!

Damn, and I was all carefree and cavalier about this storm and now I am worried for you.
Don't die, and stuff.

Seriously, you all, don't worry. We're fine. Hell, we're still joking about taking the kids to the beach and finding a TV crew to talk to. You know, so we can say, "We came all the way from OKLAHOMA and we're going to HUNKER DOWN because we want the kids to see a REAL HURRICANE!"

It's all good.

"Down at The Twist And Shout" - only because I love Mary Chapin Carpenter's sweet, pure voice. And the lyrics kind of stick out in my head. Something about a storm brewing, too, right? So, it's apropos for your post! Love it!

Mary Chapin Carpenter? And I hope you don't have a little storm blowin' in tonight! And jeez, sure hope the return trip is easier. They owe you a few extra bags of pretzels or something!

Hey! I've been to both Longboat Key AND Anna Maria Island! My inlaws used to live in that neck of the woods. I hope it clears up for you so you can use all that sunscreen you packed. Wouldn't you be irritated if you packed it all and didn't even get to use it? What a waste of precious luggage space. I mean really! You could have brought another pairs of shoes in the space all that stuff took up! ;)

Susan, you live in a place where people go out into the middle of the street to watch tornadoes form overhead just for fun (or maybe that's just MY geeky friends). I doubt that a little ol' hurricane is going to bother you much. ;-)

Really, give me a blizzard over hurricanes and tornadoes any day. Hardly anybody's vacation has ever been derailed by a blizzard!

I just saw the news is reporting evacuations of parts of Florida so I actually went and looked up Holmes Beach to make sure you weren't being evacuated. I am such a mother hen...

You sound like you're faring admirably well in spite of the weather.

I would say though, I would give the boys an ice cream cone BEFORE you let them get in the tub. Or else they'll just have to get in the tub again.

Unless that's the idea. :)

What an adventure for the boys, though, eh? I bet it's actually quite cool for them. And hey, look at it this way, at least they can't lose their shoes! :D

Darm I was going to impart some of my years of wisdom and experience and Kep beat me to it.

Ice cream first - bath later. Or it will be bath, ice cream, bath.

At first, I was going to berate you for posting from the beach, but then you mentioned possible HURRICANE EVACUATION, and now I'm rivited, like this is our very own reality show. Hour by hour, please. Even if you're hammered. ESPECIALLY if you're hammered.

Have you evacuated yet? I see that there is a tornado watch for Holmes Beach right now, and I can't help but laugh. The damn things won't leave us alone!

Stay safe, dear.

Hooray for Mocha (who named artist AND title) and Heather for recognizing the lyric. Martinis for both of you!

Now I have to go make sure my cell phone is charged.

Hey! You are right in our new "vacation spot" - my folks bought a condo on Longboat Key last year and we'll be there every year now that we have a free place to stay. (Assuming it doesn't get obliterated by a storm this year.)

I liked Anna Maria Island - more funky than boring old Longboat. :)

The Mir link for Want Not is not working for me. (I loves me a shopping blog, and if it's about shopping BARGAINS, all the better.) Anyone else?
