holiday huffing

28 November 2006
Perhaps the last sockless day for a while.

We have a basic plastic Christmas tree, because nothing says Happy Birthday Baby Jesus! like fake pine. The kids are in love with the tree and cannot seem to stop burrying their faces in the pointy pretend needles and inhaling deeply, which just drives me berserk and also grosses me out a little.

Me: STOP SMELLING THE TREE!

Henry: But we can't HELP OURSELVES!

Charlie: Because it smells like GINGERBREAD!

The tree, if it has any particular odor at all, smells vaguely like warm dust, probably because last year we were too damn lazy to close the box completely and so it wasn't exactly clean when it came in the house this year. We have two ornaments made of cinnamon (yes, really! and no, I have no idea how you make a Christmas tree ornament out of cinnamon) which really do smell lovely, although not really like gingerbread at all. The boys are fascinated by the smelly ornaments and have been sniffing everything else on the tree to see what Christmas smells like. Because, as Henry pointed out, they can't HELP THEMSELVES.

I'm left wondering two things: one, can you get high from sniffing cinnamon? and two, how did I turn into someone who says STOP SMELLING THE CHRISTMAS TREE?

Ho ho ho.

We have made cinnamon ornaments before and they make great Xmas gifts! They are super easy but a little messy.
If it makes you feel any better, one of our cats keeps licking our plastic tree. Silly!

We had a dog that ate the cinnamon ornaments off the tree. This was 75 lb. Airedale, mind you, that delicately plucked those babies right off without knocking off another bulb. It's kind of an odd but humorous Christmas memory for my family.

Those cinnamon ornaments sound great. I will have to get a few of those to make our basic plastic tree smell better. I mean, we wouldn't want to insult Jesus' birthday with a horrible smelling tree, right?

One - yes, cinnamon is totally addictive.

Two - LOVE THOSE SHOES!

Three - depends...if sniffing the Christmas tree is as bad as hollering, "Stop licking the dog!" then, I don't know what the hell happened, either!

Just wanted to say how much I enjoy reading your blog. What is up with this crazy weather around here! You know that if we get even a dusting of snow here tomorrow then the chains come out on the tires and all the schools close down.

Oh, no! Fake pine! Lady-A keeps trying to bring the fake tree into our house, but I'm a die-hard real tree guy.

Even if it'll leave little pine needles all over my house FOR MONTHS.
